On the second Advent weekend (4-5 December 2015), like every year the novel team participated in the International Symposium for Foot Surgery organized by the German Association for Foot Surgery (GFFC). The symposium was held for the 23rd time in the town of Unterschleißheim right at the city limits of Munich.
Many participants and various speakers made the GFFC symposium a lively and successful event for exchange on the latest developments in the treatment of the foot. The theme of pedography featured in various papers and speeches. At our booth novel presented their load distribution systems, especially our pedography systems emed® and pedar® and also the latest development - the pedoped® system for the monitoring of the normal force between the plantar side of the foot and the shoe. We thank all visitors who passed by our stand to discuss and test our systems.

The College of Podiatry Annual Conference was held in Harrogate, UK from 19 to 21 November 2015. Over 1,200 podiatrists, 100 speakers and 80 exhibitors attended this year´s conference. Thereby it was Europe’s biggest and best podiatry conference once again. A great social programme with a quiz night and supper on Thursday 19 and a conference dinner with entertainment and dancing on Friday 20 made the conference perfect and gave the opportunity to all participants to meet and talk to each other.

The new pedoped® insole monitors the normal force between the plantar side of the foot and the shoe.
It is now possible for the first time to accurately measure the force statically or dynamically inside a shoe during walking and running utilizing only one large sensor which covers the entire plantar surface of the foot. The force between the foot and the shoe is accurately measured regardless of from which part of the foot is making contact with the ground. This was not previously possible due to the typical characterization of partly loaded flat surface pressure sensors.
The new pedoped® is based on a new patent and consist of a large linear sensor that avoids errors. For applications in which the distribution of localized loads are not of interest, but rather the total load on the foot is of importance, the new pedoped® insole is the optimal solution.
Long-term monitoring of body load on both feet as well as instability, balance, fatigue, performance and biofeedback are possible.
The pedoped® insoles come in any foot size and can be custom made for specific applications.
To eliminate any disturbance or influence to the proprioception of the plantar aspect of the foot, the small electronics are connected to the insole via a very thin flexible band and then attached to the lacing or shoe upper. This method was chosen over embedding the electronics directly into the insole where electronic parts could disturb the sensation.
Additionally, it is possible to place the pedoped® insole in the shoe at the same time as a subject’s corrective insole without disturbing the biomechanical function of the correction insole.
Several smartphone apps will be available for the pedoport® software, each tailored to the specific application such as long-term load monitoring with biofeedback, bipedal comparison of normal ground reaction force, balance and stability of gait, or monitoring of forefoot walking/running.

The pedoped® sensor technology can also be supplied as footpat® sensor mat that can be put on the floor to measure normal ground reaction force in gait or balance of force in posturography.
The measurement rate of the pedoped® insole and footpat® force mat can be user-defined. The raw data are available so that users may program their own applications.

From 24 to 26 September the 56th Congress of the German Society for Hand Surgery (DGH) was held in Ludwigsburg, Germany. novel showed its manugraphy® system for hand diagnostics and the pliance® sensor glove systems for measuring the pressure distribution on the hand. These both systems are used especially in the clinical routine, human ergonomics and occupational medicine. We were really pleased about the lecture of Dr. Marion Mühldorfer-Fodor from Rhön Klinikum AG in Bad Neustadt who presented their latest scientific work using our manugraphy® system: “The Effect of Midcarpal Versus Total Wrist Fusion on the Hand´s Load Distribution During Gripping”.
For the third time the ORTHOPÄDIE SCHUH TECHNIK will be held from 23 to 24 October 2015 in Cologne, Germany. It is the only specialized trade fair for the orthopedic shoe technology industry in Europe. The target audience are the owners of orthopedic shoe technological companies and their staff, schools and junior employees as well as manufacturers and dealers from this area. The ORTHOPÄDIE SCHUH TECHNIK also offers a high-class program for the neighbouring professional groups around the foot, such as orthopedic technicians, podiatrists, medical suppliers, comfort shoe retailers as well as specialized physicians and scientists from orthopedics.

The 59th Annual Congress of the Educational Association for Orthopaedics Technology (FOT) will take place from 16th to 17th October 2015 in the Hegelsaal in Bamberg, Germany. From 10 to 12 September 2015 the 24th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Movement Analysis in Adults and Children (ESMAC) took place at the Heidelberg University, Germany. This multidisciplinary event was once again an enjoyable and enriching forum for researchers and clinicians especially for all those who are interested in the clinical and technical aspects of human movement analysis. novel showed at its booth the large emed®-xl platform system for dynamic barefoot measurements, the pedar® in-shoe measurement system and especially the latest developement – the pedoped® insole system for measuring the force inside the shoe.
Among many interesting lectures and posters another highlight of the meeting was for sure the gala dinner party which was held at the old castle of Heidelberg. After the four course menu everyone had the chance to join in on the dancefloor to electronic rhythms. It is rumored that the party took to 3 clock in the morning.

The new pedoped® insole monitors the normal plantar force between the foot and the shoe.
|It is now possible for the first time to accurately measure the force statically or dynamically inside a shoe during walking and running utilizing only one large sensor which covers the entire plantar surface of the foot.
The force between the foot and the shoe is accurately measured independent from which part of the foot is making contact with the ground. This was not previously possible due to the typical characterization of partly loaded pressure sensors. To accomplish a total plantar force calculation current technology utilizes sophisticated electronics and a dense matrix of pressure sensors in which the total force was summed across all sensors.

In contrast, the pedoped® covers the entire plantar surface of the foot with one large linear sensor that avoids errors due to partly loading. For applications in which the distribution of localized loads are not of interest, but rather the total load on the foot is of importance, the new pedoped® insole is the optimal solution. This new technology has a matchbox sized electronics and communicates wirelessly with a smartphone via Bluetooth®. The data is transmitted to the smartphone real-time so that the subject can receive an instantaneous biofeedback via sound or vibration. The data can be stored inside the smartphone .
The data can later be transferred to a PC for multiple analysis of the data matching with the specific task. Long term monitoring of body load as well as instability, fatigue, performance and biofeedback are possible. Later on the pedoped® sensor may also be divided into 3 areas such as forefoot, midfoot or hindfoot for a more detailed analysis of force production. The pedoped® insoles come in any foot size and can be custom made for specific applications.

The pedar® system was continuously demonstrated by CeRiSM (Research Center for Sport, Mountain and Health, University of Verona) on the exhibition OutDoor Friedrichshafen (15-18 July 2015).
The goal of the presentation was to show how the team does use the pedar® system not only to study walking and running to get information on the athletes, but also to do comparative and quantitative investigation on boots and shoes with academic expertise, in order to identify their functional characteristics.

From 8 to 10 July the 2015 edition of the Footwear Biomechanics Symposium was held in Liverpool, UK hosted by Liverpool John Moores University, co-organised with the University of Liverpool. About 250 people participated in this symposium which was like a family meeting of all well-known foot biomechanics experts. novel showed all of their products for measuring the pressure distribution under the foot. We got great feedback especially with our new pedoped insole system and some of our customers wanted to test the system directly so that they were running around with the pedoped insoles for up to 2 hours.
FBS was a satellite meeting of the Congress of the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB), where novel is at the moment (12 - 16 July 2015 in Glasgow, UK).
From 24 to 27 June 2015 novel participated in the 20th Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science in Malmö, Sweden. We presented a wide range of our load distribution measurement systems which could be used in various sports applications. From 12th to 16th July 2015 the 25th Congress of the International Society of Biomechanics will be held at The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, UK. In 2015 this unique congress will be hosted by the Biomedical Engineering Department of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and in particular the Clinical and Sports Biomechanics Research Group. novel participated in the 7th International Symposium on the Diabetic Foot in The Hague, The Netherlands, from the 20th to the 23rd of May.
This unique multidisciplinary symposium has become the standard international (scientific) meeting on the topic “Diabetic Foot” and was a complete success. We met long standing customers and good friends and of course many people who are interested in all new developments for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lower extremity problems in diabetes.
Therefore we mainly showed and demonstrated our emed pressure platform system which is an indispensable tool in the early recognition and treatment of diabetic patients and also our pedar in-shoe system which is used for checking the pressure reduction of the diabetic footwear. But also our latest development – the mobile force sensor pedoped for measurements of the force between the foot and the shoe – drew great interest.

In 2015, the multidisciplinary ECSS Congress will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. The 2015 congress theme of Sustainable Sport will permeate the academic programme as well as the arrangements. The 7th International Symposium on the Diabetic Foot (ISDF) will take place from 20 to 23 May 2015 in the World Forum Convention Center in The Hague, The Netherlands. This unique multidisciplinary symposium has become the standard international (scientific) meeting on the topic “Diabetic Foot” and will cover the latest scientific developments, both findings from basic research and clinical insights important to everybody’s daily practice.
A number of renowned specialists in the field will discuss the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lower extremity problems in diabetes. Interactive workshops will provide all participants with useful information for the daily clinical practice and oral/poster presentations of submitted abstracts will inform on the current status of research.

novel just returned from the Annual Conference of the South German Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgeons that was held from 30 April to 2 May 2015 in Baden-Baden, Germany. The interesting programme focussed primarily on sports injuries and treatment, joint preservation and replacement as well as prevention and rehabilitation.

For the first time novel participated in the International Fair for Rehabilitation, Therapy and Prevention (REHAB) which took place from 23 to 25 April 2015 in Karlsruhe, Germany. 375 exhibitors and 100 institutions from 11 countries as well as over 18.000 visitors came to Karlsruhe too see new developments in the medical market.

Our visitors were mainly interested in the pliance® wheelchair system for measuring the seat and back but also in the new pedoped® system with biofeedback feature for the support during rehabilitation and therapy after foot surgery.

From April 23 - 25, 2015, the 13th Staffordshire Conference on Clinical Biomechanics took place at Staffordshire University in Stoke on Trent, UK. The conference offered a wide range of exciting lectures and scientific presentations focussing on lower limb biomechanics and footwear research, and in particular on biomechanics of the at risk foot (with a focus on Diabetes) and musculoskeletal biomechanics of the lower limb and footwear.
novel organised a successful preconference workshop on the theme of „Plantar Pressure Assessment”, together with Dr Claudia Giacomozzi, Senior Research Scientist at the Department of Technology and Health, Italian National Institute of Health. The workshop covered basic concepts in plantar pressure and ground reaction force measurements along with an introduction to the technologies used for plantar pressure assessment. Dr Claudia Giacomozzi presented how to create measuring logs to test orthopaedic insoles and shoes for the Diabetic patients. Comparative measurements were performed with a number of (healthy) volunteers from the audience. The workshop triggered manifold questions, on themes including European legislation on load distribution technology and the accuracy of the measurements systems on the market.

novel participated in the Gulf Diabetic Foot Conference 2015 in Muscat, Oman, from the 19th to the 20th of April. novel were guests at the stand of our commercial partner Pulsemed, the company that distributes the novel systems in Oman.
This conference was a unique opportunity to meet and network with colleagues from around the world with wide-ranging research interests and expertise in Diabetic foot, diagnosis, prevention treatment and rehabilitation.
During a typical demonstration at the stand, the visitor had a chance to test the novel systems (emed®, pedar®, pliance®, manugraphy® and pedoped®) and was then provided with a personal report on a CD-ROM.

The 14th Annual Meeting of the Clinical Movement Analysis Society (CMAS) was held on 16th and 17th April at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, part of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, and at Magdalen College, Oxford University.
Many specialists from leading gait laboratories and universities in the UK participated in that prestigious meeting. novel presented its emed® system for barefoot measurement and its pedar® system for measurement inside the shoe. These two systems are really important and useful for gait analysis.
The Annual Meeting of the German Association for Sports Science (DVS) - Department Biomechanics was held from 26 to 28 March 2015 at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. novel presented different systems for load distribution measurement which can be used for a wide range of applications in sports science and biomechanics. Especially our latest developments – the pedoped insole for monitoring the normal plantar force between the foot and the shoe and the emed-xl platform system for recording and evaluating pressure distribution under the foot in static and dynamic conditions - were really interesting for the participants. The Annual Meeting of the German Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Association took place on 20th and 21st of March 2015 at the University of Bayreuth. The main goal of this meeting was to get a good overview regarding the current developments of foot surgery. Therefore the participants discussed about injuries of the foot and the ankle, and their diagnosis and treatment. novel showed the pedography technology, the load distribution measurement for weight-bearing CT as well as the intra operative pedography. From 16 to 17 March 2015 a special customer training was held at the Acibadem Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. The hospital just bought a high-end setup for their Acibadem Sports Center which will be used for clinic daily routine and also for research. In this center professional and amateur athletes, children as well as young adults and those with chronic illnesses will regain their health aided by many sports medicine center specialists. About seven people from Acibadem Hospital were present and got a training on using the new emed®-xl platform system and the pedar® in-shoe system.
The emed system is used for barefoot measurements, to analyse the dynamic foot function. Measuring barefoot gives a pressure picture of the foot without the influence of shoes. This way it can be used for diagnosis. As a perfect combination to the emed system the pedar system measures the interaction between foot, shoe and ground, by inserting a sensor insole into the shoe. It can be used for the control of therapy and to assess the function of the shoe.
The team from Acibadem Hospital learned how they can do measurements with both systems and how they can use the novel scientific analysis software for their daily work and research.
From 30 April to 2 May 2015, the Annual Meeting of the Association of Southern German Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgeons (VSOU) will be held once again in Baden-Baden, Germany. This year’s conference will focus on the sports injuries and treatment, joint preservation and replacement as well as prevention and rehabilitation.

For the first time novel will participate in the International Fair for Rehabilitation, Therapy and Prevention (REHAB) which will take place from 23 to 25 April 2015 in Karlsruhe, Germany. This fair is one of the world’s leading and largest trade fairs for rehabilitation, therapy and prevention. REHAB is geared towards both specialist visitors and persons with disabilities and their carers who wish to find out about current developments in rehabilitation, orthopedics and medical technology as well as about new products, specialized services, trends and vocational training opportunities. About 500 exhibitors will participate on an area of 30,000 square meters and more than 25,000 visitors are expected during this three-day event.

Building on the success of previous meetings, Staffordshire University is pleased to announce the 13th Staffordshire Conference on Clinical Biomechanics (SCCB) at the University Campus, Stoke on Trent, UK. The 3-day conference will be held from the 23th to the 25th of April, 2015. It will provide a forum for information dissemination on lower limb clinical biomechanics and will facilitate discussion on research and case studies in this field via plenary sessions.
In addition to lower limb biomechanics and footwear research, this year's conference will focus on biomechanics of the at risk foot (with a focus on Diabetes) on the first day and the musculoskeletal biomechanics of the lower limb and footwear on the second day. The keynote speakers will outline the latest developments in the area of pathomechanics and pathology of the foot at risk and highlight the role of technology in understanding biomechanical principles with a focus on diagnosis and management of patients.
Two of the keynote speeches will be held by two of our users: Dr Claudia Giacomozzi, a senior research scientist at the Department of Technology and Health (Section of Biomechanics and Rehabilitative Technologies) of the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) and Dr Julie Stebbins from the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences of the University of Oxford, UK.

The workshop will cover basic concepts in plantar pressure and ground reaction force measurements along with an introduction to the technologies used for plantar pressure assessment. The workshop will be facilitated by Dr Claudia Giacomozzi and Gabriella Atzori.

The 14th Annual Meeting of the Clinical Movement Analysis Society (CMAS) of the UK and Ireland will be held on 16th and 17th April at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, part of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, and at Magdalen College, Oxford University. This prestigious and popular event is well attended by orthopaedic surgeons, clinical scientists, bioengineers, researchers and physiotherapists from leading gait laboratories and universities in the UK. Even our novel system´s user and leader of the gait analysis lab at the University of Heidelberg, Dr. Sebastian Wolf, will do a keynote presentation. He supervises a research group which is involved in clinical applications of gait analysis including neurologic disorders as well as prosthetics and orthotics. The 1st Symposium for Minimally Invasive Foot Surgery on 6th March in Augsburg was a successful and interesting event. novel met many customers and new prospects for our load distribution measurement systems especially used to assess the foot function before and after foot surgery.
The Annual Meeting of the German Association for Sports Science (DVS) - Department Biomechanics, will be held from 26 to 28 March 2015 at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. Under the title „Active Health: Exercise is healthy“ Prof. Arampatzis, the president of the meeting, would like to show the importance of physical exercises for health prevention and rehabilitation. Therefore the main topics of the meeting are exercises and health, sports biomechanics, clinical biomechanics and neuromuscular biomechanics. novel will be present with a booth to show the different ranges of application of load distribution measurement in sports science and biomechanics. The Annual Meeting of the German Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Association is coming up soon. It will take place on the 20th and 21st of March 2015 at the University of Bayreuth. The participants and guests of the German network around the theme of the foot will discuss injuries of the foot and the ankle, and their diagnosis and treatment, thereby focussing on most recent trends and innovations.

Following the huge success of the last inaugural event, the second independent Directorate of Podiatric Surgery Conference will be held at Radcliffe House, Warwick University on 12-14 March 2015. From 26th to 29th January the novel team participated in the Arab Health conference and exhibition in Dubai, UAE. Over 120,000 visitors catched up on the latest medical products and developments of over 4,000 exhibitors from 70 countries. Many interested people were visiting our booth and we showed them our load distribution measurement systems and software – especially for the treatment of the diabetic foot.
Various public officials came to our booth, like the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and once again the Bavarian State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology, Franz Josef Pschierer which is by now a big fan of our medical products.
