The Tanzania project recently welcomed its 1500th patient

novel continues to sponsor the emed® scan project in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, which started in January 2011. The project is screening thousands of people with Diabetes in order to study the patterns of pressure distribution with time and other parameters.

The Tanzania project recently welcomed its 1500th patient.

Dr Abbas’ 1500th patient, who is lucky to have this number: Mr Nelson Joseph Ruganuza, accountant, 35 years old, suffering from Diabetes for 2 months

Project leader Dr Abbas reports from Tanzania:

emed® scan tests officially started on the 2nd of January 2011. All new cases that came to our center were able to walk and to undergo emed® scan testing. I worked full-time on the project together with our assistant podiatrist Kulsum Ramadhani carrying out all tasks concerning emed® scan. emed® tests and the advice and treatment were given completely free of charge to all the patients.
Over the past two years - until 24 October 2013 - we have managed to collect 1 500 cases that successfully underwent emed® scans testing. Each patient was subject to extensive data collection, and the data were inserted into the program’s data base. These data include basic demographic information, data related to foot and foot wear, and to emed® scan as well as emed® scan measurements. Apart from these data, we have collected some additional relevant information.
All patients are extremely happy for having had the opportunity to undergo emed® scan testing and respective treatment as we have prevented lots of ulcers that would have caused severe problems for the patients. All of the patients have been given advice on foot wear.
We conclude that emed® scan tests have been very beneficial and successful in preventing amputations among our poor and destitute patients with Diabetes.

Dr. Zulfiqarali G. Abbas,
Consultant Physician, Endocrinologist, Diabetologist
Chairman of Pan-African Diabetic Foot Study Group
Chairman International Working Group of Diabetic Foot Africa Region

novel Meets Princess Camilla During the Opening of the National Diabetes Centre in Oman

Princess Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, visited the Oman last week in order to launch the new National Diabetes and Endocrine Centre in the Wilayat of Bausher. She was received by Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Obaid Al Sa'eedi, Minister of Health, and a number of Omani officials. She also met our CTO Dr Axel Kalpen during the opening of the centre who explained to The Duchess of Cornwall the importance of pedography in the treatment of the diabetic foot.

Princess Camilla launching the National Diabetes Centre in Oman, March 2013

Camilla toured several clinics and sections of the newly established centre, where she was briefed on the goals of establishing the centre, as various Omani newspapers reported (e.g. Times of Oman, www.timesofoman.com). She received an introduction on the role of the new Diabetic Centre in providing specialised care for the diabetics and following-up the status of this disease in the Sultanate.

The National Diabetes and Endocrine Centre is located in Bausher Health Complex on an area of 4 480 square meters. It consists of adult and children outpatient clinics, day-care suites, diagnosis laboratories, pharmacy, store and higher education centre. The centre was established due to the need for a specialised centre equipped with the latest techniques to combat diabetes. novel installed the pedography laboratory for the functional analysis of the Neuropathic Diabetic Foot and the manufacturing and dynamic monitoring of the foot supply.

The Duchess of Cornwall and our CTO Dr Axel Kalpen had an animated conversation about the use of novel’s pedography technology for the diagnosis and treatment of the diabetic foot. The Duchess showed great interest and learnt that the Diabetic Unit at King's College Hospital, under the direction of Mr. Mike Edmonds, had been working with it for many years. "Ooohh... I should have known that!", she said.
Dr Axel Kalpen also met various Omani officials at the Diabetes Centre and on parting Minister of Health Al Sa’eedi shook hands with Dr Axel Kalpen in thanks for the cooperation with novel.

emed Platform Project at Dr. Abbas‘ Center in Tanzania Welcomes its 1000ths Patient

novel continues to sponsor the emed scan project taking place both in Tanzania and Cyyprus, which was started in January 2011. The project is screening thousands of people with Diabetes in order to study the patterns of pressure distribution with time and other parameters.

The Tanzania project recently welcomed its 1000th patients.

Dr. Abbas’ 1000th patient, who is lucky to have this number:
Mr. Eliakim Yona Kitomari, 43 years old, suffering from Diabetes for 8 years

Dr. Abbas reports from Tanzania:

emed scan tests officially started on 2 January 2011. All new cases that came to our center were able to walk and underwent e-med scan testing. I worked full-time on the project, together with our assistant podiatrist Kulsum. emed tests and advice and treatment were given completely free of charge to all the patients.
Over the past two years - until March 2013 - we have managed to collect about 1 040 cases that successfully underwent e-med scans testing. Each patient was subject to extensive data collection, and the data were inserted into the program’s data base. These data include basic demographic information, data related to foot and foot wear, and data related to e-med scan itself and e-med scan measurements. Apart from these, we have collected some additional relevant data from our side.
All patients are extremely happy as we have prevented lots of ulcers that would have caused severe problems for the patients. All of the patients have been given advice on foot wear.
We conclude that e-med scan tests have been very beneficial and successful in preventing amputations among our poor and destitute patients with Diabetes.

novel Supports Research Among Tribal People in India

novel continues to support a research project on the plantar pressure distribution among tribal people in India, designed by physiotherapist Dr. Rajani Mullerpatan.

Dr. Mullerpatan reports on the ongoing research:

“People in India continue to walk barefoot in varied proportions in rural and urban population for various reasons like socio-economic, climatic and spiritual. A project was designed by Dr. Rajani Mullerpatan, MGM School of Physiotherapy, Navi Mumbai, India to study characteristics of bare foot with an objective of protection of foot health.

However we lacked appropriate equipment for assessment of barefoot. MGM School of Physiotherapy had just begun and therefore could not afford novel pedar in-shoe system which would be appropriate for preliminary work because of its portability. We approached novel for help and am very pleased to share with all of you that Mr. Peter Seitz generously helped by loaning the equipment free of cost. Mr. Seitz has also kindly extended the loan period. I am immensely grateful to him and the entire novel team for their support to foster research in India.

We conducted the study in the tribal village of Ransai in the state of Maharashtra in India. This village is located at an altitude from sea level. People living in this village are below poverty line. They walk many miles barefoot. Hence an investigation was carried out to explore their foot characteristics in terms of plantar pressure distribution using novel pedar in-shoe system. Portability of pedar system allowed us to measure plantar pressure distribution of tribal people in their own village setting.

The study is in process. We intend to continue the study with measurements using emed platform for higher accuracy of findings. Results of the study will follow.

Once again, a big thank you to novel for their support!”
